Case Study

Empired was tasked with assisting VCS (Victorian Cytology Services) in desiging a new immunisation management service for the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS); our design was used to mould VCS' build service into the new solution. DHHS' outgoing service was described as "dated", "complicated" and "not too user friendly".
At the beginning of this engagement, I was assisting the senior designner in building out wireframes, facilitating workshops, and coming up with a design direction that accommodates nurse fatigue during peak innoculation periods. Midway through the project, I took over the project and ran workshops, testing and design, with the help of the resident change consultant.
We worked closely with the product owner to deliver a revised, intuitive solution, that would provide immunisation providers all the information needed at a glance, and simplified their process of managing vaccines.

Starting the project, it was vital for the design team to map out the various flows and screen functions that a user encountered within any given session. We were unable to get a hands-on experience with a terminal running the software; so we relied on a mixture of screenshots, and relaying back to the product owner to validate our UI flow.
→ Revision of system processes & map with UI flow
→ Wireframe new system design
→ Playback of wireframe & amends
→ Usability Testing of wireframes
→ Information synthesis & playback of findings
→ Hi-Fi designs from amended wireframes
→ Playback of Hi-Fi designs & amends

Each sprint the team would take a branch from the UI flow, confirm the needs of each screen, and mock up a wireframe in Sketch. These would then be played back a couple of days later with the product owner, and key nurse representatives, amends would be made and we would then go onto user testing.

Following user testing, we would synthesise the information gathered and playback our findings. We would prioritise changes to be made, and park those that could be considered a future feature. I would then go and start designing the high-fidelity screens for the final playback and sign-off of the sprint.
